Brampton Black Hair Dressers

Tao Te Ching - Book 1

BOOK OF THE WAY AND UNDER

1
The way that can be expressed by word is not the eternal Way; name that can be named is not the eternal Name. (Being) nameless is the origin of heaven and earth with a name, it is the mother of all things.
Therefore, when we are constantly free from passions, we see his spiritual essence, when a constant passion, seen form bounded.
These two things have the same origin and are given different names. They are called every two deep. They are deep, double deep. It is the gateway to all things spiritual.
2

in the world where all men have learned to appreciate the beauty (moral), then the ugliness (Vice) was published. When all men have learned to appreciate good, then evil has appeared. That's why being and nonbeing arise from each other.
The difficult and easy to produce another. The long and the short form to give each other.
The top and bottom show each other their inequality.
tones and voice mutually agree. Anticipation and posteriority are the consequence of one another.
Hence the holy man made his occupation of non-action. He
include instructions in silence. So all things start moving, and he denied anything.
He produces and appropriates it.
He perfects them and do not count on them.
Its merits are accomplished, it does not attach to it.
It does not cling to his merits, so they leave the point.
3

In exalt not wise, it prevents the people from fighting. In
did not take the property acquisition difficult, it prevents people from engaging in flight. By not looking at objects point to excite desires, it prevents the people's heart be troubled
1.
So when the holy man governs, he empties his heart, he fills his stomach (inside her), it weakens his will, and it strengthens bones. It is studied constantly to make the people ignorant and free from desires.
It ensures that those who know do not dare act. It
Practice non-action, and then there is nothing that is not well governed.
4

O that is deep! It seems the patriarch of all beings.

It dulls his subtlety, he is released from all bonds, it tempers its splendor, it is akin to dust.

Oh it is pure! It seems to remain forever.
I do not know who he is son, it seems to have preceded the master of the sky.

5

Heaven and earth have no particular affection. They regard all creatures as dogs
2
straw (of sacrifice).

The holy man has no particular affection, he looks all the people as straw dogs (of sacrifice).
Being which is between heaven and earth like a bellows which is empty and exhausted, till it starts moving and producing more and more (wind).
Whoever speaks a lot (of Tao) is often silenced.
It is better to observe the environment.

6

The spirit of the valley

3
dies and is called the mysterious female.
The door of the mysterious female is called the root of heaven and earth.
It is eternal and there seems to be (physically).
If we actually use, we felt no fatigue.

7

Heaven and earth have eternal life.
If they can have eternal life because they do not live for themselves. Therefore they may have eternal life.
Hence the holy man goes after the other, and he becomes the first.
He emerges from his body and his body is preserved.
Is not he has no private interest?
is why it may succeed in his private interests.
8

The man of superior virtue is like water.

Water excels in doing good to people and not fight the point.

She lives in places that hate the crowd.
is why (the wise) approach of Tao.
He likes the situation in the most humble.

His heart likes to be as deep as an abyss. If

hath dispersed, he excels) show humanity.

If he speaks, he excels in practice the truth.

If government, he excels at providing peace.

If it does, it excels in showing its ability.

If he moves, he excels) comply to time. It

fight against anyone, so it receives no mark of blame.

9

It is better not to fill a vase that will hold (when full).

If you sharpen a blade, although it explores hand, we can not keep it constantly (sharp).

If a room is filled with gold and precious stones, nobody can keep them.

If you are showered with honors and they boast, they get into troubles.

When did great things and got the reputation, he retired to the sidelines.

This is the way to heaven.

10
The spiritual soul
4

must switch to the sensitive soul.

If man keeps the unit
5
they may remain indissoluble.

If tames its vital force and makes it extremely flexible, it can be like a newborn.
If he delivers light of intelligence, it will be free of any disability (legal).
If cherishes the people and brings peace to the kingdom, he can practice non-action.
If he lets the gates of heaven open and close
6

, it may be like the female (that is to say, remain at rest).

If his light penetrate everywhere, it may seem ignorant

7.

It produces and nourishes beings.

It produces and does not look like his property.

It makes them feel good and do not count on them.
He reigns over them and not treat them as master.
This is known to possess a power deep.

11

Thirty spokes meet around a hub. It's empty tank depends on usage.

We knead the clay to make pots.

is its use depends empty vases.

are drilled doors and windows to a house. It depends on their empty home use.

is why the utility has to be, the use of non-being springs.

12

The five colors dull sight of man.
The five notes (music) on hearing the dull man.
The five flavors dull the taste of man.

Races violent exercise of hunting mislead the heart of man.

property acquisition difficult to push the man who acts on him.

Hence the holy home caring for her inside and do not care about his eyes.

is why he abandoned this and adopt it.

13

The wise dread fame as the ignominy, his body weight as a great calamity.
What are these words: he fears the fame as the ignominy?

Glory is something low. When he got it, it is as filled with fear, when he was lost, as it is filled with fear.
is why we said he fears the fame as infamy.
What are these words: his body weight as a great calamity?
If we feel great calamities, it is because we have a body. When we have more body (when we emerged from our body), what calamities can we feel?
Therefore, when a man fears to govern the empire itself, we may assign the empire when he regret to govern the empire, we can give him the care of the empire.

14

You look at (the Tao) and you do not see it: they say colorless.
You listen and you do not agree: they say voiceless. You want to touch it and you did not reach: it is said intangible.
These three qualities can not be scanned using the word. This is why they are confused into one.
Its upper part is not lighted, and its lower part is not obscure.
He is eternal and can not be named.
It is within the non-being.
is called shape without shape, an image without an image.
is called vague, indeterminate.
If you go to meet him, you do not see his face if you follow it you do not see his back.
By observing the Tao of old that can govern the lives of today.

If man can know the origin of ancient things, they say he holds the thread of Tao.

15

In ancient times, those who excelled in practicing the Tao were subtle and sophisticated, abstract and penetrating.
They were so deep that one could not know them.
As they could not know, I try to give an idea (of what they were). They were
shy like crossing a stream in winter.

They were serious as a foreigner (in the presence of the host).

They faded as the ice melts

8.

They were rude not worked like wood.

It was empty as a valley.

They were problems like muddy water.

Who was it who knows little to soothe little trouble (his heart) by letting it sit?

Who was it who knows rise gradually (for spiritual life) by a prolonged calm?

Whoever maintains that Tao does not want to be full

9.

It is not full (of himself), so it keeps its defects (apparent), and do not wish (to trial) perfect.

16

Whoever is able to fill the void arde firmly rest.
The ten thousand things arise together, then I see them go back.
After being in a flourishing condition, each returns to its origin.
Back to its original name be at rest.
Being at rest is called back to life.
Back to life is called being constant.
Know Being Earnest called being informed.

He who knows not to be constant yields to disorder and gets into troubles.

Anyone who knows he has a constant core width.

Whoever has a soul is just wide.

Whoever is right becomes king.

Whoever is king joins the sky.

Whoever joins the sky imitates the Tao.

Whoever imitates the Tao remains long ; Until the end of his life, he is exposed to any danger.

17

In Antiquity, people just knew he had kings.
The following, he loved them and gave them praise. The following
he feared.
The following, he despised them.
He who does not trust the others not getting their trust.

(Early) were serious and reserved in their speech.

After they had acquired merits and succeeded in their designs, the hundred families said: We follow our nature.

18

When the Great Way 10 had dwindled, there appeared humanity and justice.
When prudence and foresight were shown itself, there arose a great hypocrisy.
When the six parents had ceased to live in harmony, we live acts of filial piety and paternal affection.
When States had fallen into disorder, we live faithful and devoted subjects.

19

If you waive the wisdom
11
and leave the caution, the people will be a hundred times happier.

If you give up and quit humanity justice, the people will return to filial piety and paternal affection.
If you give up and quit the skill gain, thieves and robbers will disappear.
Abandon these three things and convince yourself that the appearance is not enough.
is why I show the men what they must pursue.
they try to reveal their simplicity, to retain their purity, have little bit of private interests and desires.

20

Renounce the study, and you will be free from sorrow.

How small is the difference wei (yes briefly) and o (yes slower)!

How great is the difference between good and evil!

What men fear, it is impossible not to fear.

They indulge in disorder and never stop.

The men of the multitude are elated with joy as the one who feeds on succulent dishes, like the one mounted in the spring on a high tower.

I alone am calm (my disease) have not yet germinated.

I look like a newborn who has not smiled at her mother.

I'm detached from everything, it seems that I do not know where to go.

the multitude of men have the superfluous; me alone I'm like a man who has lost everything.
I am a man of limited mind, I am devoid of knowledge.
Men the multitude are filled with lights, only I'm plunged into darkness.
The men of the world are endowed with penetration; month alone my mind is troubled and confused.
I wave like the sea, I float like I did not know where to stop.
the multitude of men all have the ability, I alone am stupid and I like a rustic man.
Month only I differ from other men because I revere the mother who feeds (all beings).

21

The visible forms of the great virtue emanate solely from Tao.
Here what is the nature of Tao.
It is vague, it is confusing.
it is confusing, it is vague! inside him, there are pictures.
it is vague, it is confusing! In

within him there is a spiritual essence. This spiritual essence is profoundly true. In

within him lies the infallible testimony (of what) from ancient times until today, his name has not passed.

It gives outcome (birth) to all beings.

As I know it is true of all beings?
(I know) by Tao.

22

What is incomplete becomes full.

That which is crooked becomes law.

What is hollow becomes full.

What is spent is new. With little

(desires) one acquires the Tao with a lot (of desires) we go astray.

Hence the holy man keeps Unity (Tao), and is the world model.
It does not light, so it shines.
It s'approuve point, so it throws glare.

He does not parade itself, so it has merit.

It boasts point, so it is the superior of the others. It

control point, so there is nobody in the empire that can fight against him.

Axiom Alumni: What it is incomplete whole, was it an empty phrase?

When man became truly perfect, (the world) has to submit to him.

23

Whoever
12
not talking about (coming to) non-action.

A fast wind does not last all morning, heavy rain does not last all day.

Who is it that produces these two things? Heaven and earth.

If heaven and the earth itself can not long survive

13
, let alone the man!
Therefore if man is engaged in the Tao, he identifies with the Tao; they engage in virtue, he identifies with virtue, it is engaged in crime, he s 'identifies the crime.

24

He who stands on his feet can not stand up straight and one who spreads her legs can not walk.
one who holds to his views is not lit.
Whoever s'approuve itself does not shine.
He who brags has no merit.
He who glories do not remain long.
If one considers this conduct by Tao, compared to a rest or food to a hideous goiter that inspire men to a constant disgust.
Therefore he who has not committed the Tao than that.

25

He is a being confused that existed before heaven and earth.

Oh it is quiet! Oh, it is immaterial!
There remains only and does not change.
It runs anywhere from collapsing point.
It can be regarded as the mother of the universe.
Me, I do not know his name.
To give it a title, I called the Way (Tao).
In striving to make him a name, I call it great.
In general, I called fleeting.
From fleeting, I call away.
removal, I call it (be) coming back.
Therefore the Tao is great, the sky is big, the earth is large, the king is also great.
Worldwide, there are four big things, and King is one.
Man imitates the earth, earth emulates heaven, heaven emulates the Tao Tao imitates nature.

26

Bass is the root of the light, the calm is the master of the movement. Hence
just as the holy man walking all day (in the Tao) and deviates from the tranquility and point of gravity.
Whatever has magnificent palaces, he remains calm and flees.
But alas! masters of ten thousand chariots behave slightly in the empire! By driving light, it loses its ministers by the fury of the passions, it loses its throne.

27
one who can walk (in the Tao) does not leave marks and one who knows how to speak does not commit mistakes and one who knows does not count development of instruments used to load and one who knows close (something) does is point lock, and it is impossible to open it, and whoever knows bind (something) does is point string, and it is impossible to untie.
Hence the Holy consistently excels in saving people, so it does not abandon men. He excels
constantly saving people, so it does not abandon people. This is called
be doubly illuminated.
Therefore the virtuous man
14
is the master of those who are not virtuous.

The man who is not virtuous is the help

15
of the virtuous man.
If one does not find his master, if the other is not the one who relishes his aid when they would receive great care, they are plunged into blindness. That is what is more important and more subtle!

28

He who knows his strength and keeps the weakness is the valley of the empire (that is to say where the center runs the empire).
If the valley of the empire, under the constant not abandon not, it will be the state of child.
He who knows and keeps his light the darkness, is the model of the Empire.
If the model of the Empire, under the constant does not fail (in him), and it will be at the peak (purity). He who knows his glory and the shame is also warning the valley of the empire.
If the valley of the empire under his constant reach for perfection and would return to the perfect simplicity (the Tao).
When the perfect simplicity (the Tao) was widespread, she formed beings. When
the holy man is raised to the job, he became the chief magistrates. He governs and greatly offends no one.

29

If man acts perfectly to govern the empire, I see that there is fail.

Empire is (like) a divine vessel (which man) should not work. If

works there, he destroyed if he wants to enter, he loses.

Therefore, among things, some work (in front) and the others follow, each other warm and cool, some are strong and others weak, some move and others stop

16.
Hence the holy man removes excess, luxury and magnificence.

30

Whoever helps the master of men by the Tao does (not) overpower the empire by force of arms.
Who we do to men, they reciprocate.
Wherever the troops stay, there arise the thorns and brambles.
In the aftermath of major wars, there is necessarily the years of famine.
Man virtuous strike a decisive blow and stops.
He dares to subjugate the empire by force of arms.
He strikes a decisive blow and not boast.
He strikes a decisive blow and should boast point.

He strikes a decisive blow and no pride point.

He strikes a decisive blow and fights only by necessity.

He strikes a decisive blow and does not want to appear strong.

When things have reached their full strength, they are aging.

This is called not to imitate the Tao. He who does not imitate the Tao soon to perish.

31

most excellent weapons are instruments of evil.

All men hate them. Therefore he who possesses the Tao does not attach to it.

In peacetime, the sage considers the left and one who believes the war is right.
weapons are instruments of evil, these are not instruments of the wise.
He only uses it when it can be dispensed with, and is at the forefront calmness and relaxation. If

triumph, he rejoices not. It rejoice, that is like killing the men.

Whoever likes to kill the men can succeed to rule the empire. In

happy events, we prefer the left

17, in the unfortunate events, we prefer the right.
General second occupies the left, the commander in chief occupies the right.
I mean you put it after the funeral rites.
Whoever killed a multitude of men should weep over them with tears and sobs.
Whoever defeated in battle, we place following the funeral rites
18.

32

The Tao is eternal and has no name.
Although it is small in its nature, the world could not subdue him. If vassals and kings can keep it, all beings will spontaneously undergo them.
Heaven and earth will unite together to get a sweet dew, and to pacify the people themselves without anyone ordering them.
soon as the Tao itself was divided, it had a name.
name once established, it must learn to remember.
He who knows how to keep from collapsing ever.

The Tao is widespread in the universe

19.

(All beings return to it) such as rivers and mountain streams are returning to rivers and seas

20.

33

He who knows men is prudent.

He who knows himself is enlightened.

He who conquers men is powerful.

He who conquers himself is strong.

He who knows enough is enough is rich.

Whoever acts with energy is endowed with a strong will.

Whoever deviates point of its nature remains long.
He who dies and does not perish
21

has an (eternal) life.

34

Tao extends everywhere and can go left or right.
All beings depend on him to be born, and he pushes the point.
When merits are accomplished, it will assign the point.
He loves and nourishes all beings, and does not look like their master. He is constantly without desires: it can be called small
22.
All beings subject themselves to him, and he does not look like their master, it can be called great.
Hence it is that, until the end of his life, the holy man does not feel great
23. is why he can accomplish great things.

35

The saint keeps the big picture (the Tao), and all peoples of the empire to rush him.
They came running, and it does them no harm, and it gives them peace, calmness and tranquility.
music and delicacies attract the passing stranger

24.

But when the Tao out of our mouth, it is bland and tasteless.

We look and we can see him one listens and no one can hear, it is used and we can not exhaust it.

36
When creature is about to shrink
25 (recognizes) with certainty that in the beginning it was expanding.

Is she about to weaken, (recognizes) with certainty that in the beginning she had the strength.
Is she about to wither away, (we recognize) with certainty that in the beginning it was the splendor.
Is she about to be stripped of everything, (we recognize) with certainty that in the beginning it was filled with donations.
This is called (a doctrine at a time) and radiant hidden

26.

What is soft triumph of what is hard, which is small triumph of what is safe.

The fish must not leave the abyss, the sharp weapon of the kingdom shall not be shown to the people.

37

Tao constantly practice non-action and (yet) there's nothing he does.
If kings and vassals can keep it, all beings will be converted.

If, once converted, they still want to get moving I will include using simple being who has no name (that is to say the Tao).
Being single with no name, do not even desire it.
The absence of desires provides the calm.
While the empire rectifies itself.

Notes:

Therefore, by not looking to stir things own desires, it prevents the heart be troubled.
In the preceding passages, the words "not" estimate, pouchang, "not to snuff," louse-kuei, show that the words "do not look" louse-chien, must relate to the king.

the effect of their tyranny, if they are born, it is not by virtue of their particular condition. Similarly, when a dog has with straw tied, placed before the altar where we offer the sacrifice to ward off misfortunes, it covers the richest ornaments. Is it affection? It is the effect of a fortuitous circumstance. When thrown away, after sacrifice, the passers-by trampling. Is it a feeling of hatred? It is also the effect of a fortuitous circumstance.

"Valley" is taken here in a figurative sense. A valley is empty and yet she has a body that is to say, it exists materially. But "the Spirit of the Valley" is empty and intangible (literally and without body). What is empty and has not received the intangible life, how could he die? The phrase ku-shen, "the Spirit of the Valley", is intended to express her virtue (the virtue of the Tao).

Hiouen p'in expression, "the mysterious female," serves to express its merits. This "female" produced all beings. It's called Hiouen, "mysterious," that if one sees unborn beings, we do not see what makes them born. The word Hiouen has a sense of "dark, deep, inscrutable." All beings have been given life, and, accordingly, are subject to death. "The Spirit of the Valley" is not born, so it does not die.

tsai before. The nature of the holy man is calm and rested, the spiritual part of his being is invariably fixed, it is not trained or perverted by material things. Although it took the animal to his residence principle (another writer said to his shell, that is to say its envelope), however the principle animal, the animal soul, obeyed in everything she wants to do. So we can say that the spiritual principle "carries" the animal principle (that is to say, leads him command). The men of the multitude submit their nature to external objects, their spirit is troubled, and when the spiritual soul obeys the soul animal. Lao Tzu teaches men to keep their minds, to keep the sensitive soul, to ensure that these principles do not separate.
The sages who cultivate the Tao ensure that the spiritual soul (Hoen) is consistently solid, attached to the animal soul, as the sunshine is "covered" the opaque body the moon (as the man carried in a chariot as a ship is carried by water). It ensures that the animal soul constantly retain the spiritual soul as well as the opaque body of the moon receive sunlight. Then the spiritual principle escapes not on the outside and the animal soul does not die.

(Act), it works. " Thse word "female", said the rest, it responds to the word ho, 'close'.

This is the path of the holy man. Though they say that sometimes it moves, sometimes it is quiet, yet he must take the absolute tranquility for the base of his conduct. When the holy man directs the administration of the kingdom, there is nothing that he does with its deep penetration. However, it always complies with feelings and needs of all creatures. It ensures that the wise men and is bounded to show themselves as the true and the false appear spontaneously And then he does not get tired to exercise caution. Emperors Yu and Chun followed precisely this way when they ruled the empire and looked as if they would have been utterly foreign.

great void, and soon his being condenses and takes a body, as water becomes ice. Therefore he who practices the Tao emerges from his body to resume its primitive essence, as the ice melts to water again.
done. He will not be full, so it can keep what he has worn, defective (apparently), and do not wish to be (brilliant) as something newly made. The holy man is stripped of everything he had inside him, he may not leave a single thing that can attach to the material world. So the holy man (cf. chap. LXX) is clothed in coarse clothes and hides in its bosom pearls. From outside it looks like a man demented, he is used as an object, it has none of the sparkle, elegance by which new things (literally "newly made") attract the attention of the crowd .

This passage means that the wise man would rather seem full of flaws and imperfections that shine through external benefits. Hence it retains the merit he has inside of him.

lack of affection remarked humanity, the existence of disobedience or rebellion remarked Justice (or the performance of the duties of subjects).
and paternal affection. But when they had dwindled, we borrowed the mask of humanity and justice for interest despicable. We saw son disobey their fathers and fathers tyrannize their son. If you opt to teach the people naturally return to filial piety and paternal affection that heaven has put into it. It is the same prudence and skill which are intended to contribute to peace and benefit of men. When their true nature has withered, it is used to violate laws with impunity or to steal other adroitly. Lao-tzu does not blame the possession of these different qualities as they are concentrated within us. It condemns the vain display only and abuse that some men do, he thinks that those who have genuinely do not show on the outside, and that those who make it seem that the appearance did not reality.

and likes to talk, away more of the Tao. Lao Tzu further compares these men who love to discuss and whose loquacity can not long endure in a fast wind which can not last all morning, and heavy rain that can last all day. But the strong taste of the discussion comes from an inner restlessness of our soul, and a fast wind and heavy rain produced by the chaotic action of heaven and earth. So if the disorder of heaven and earth can not last long, it will be the same, a fortiori, the loquacity of man.

Next Ha-chang Kong is meant here, not the length of heaven and earth, but the duration of things they produce. Heaven and earth are endowed with divine power. However, when they are joined together to produce a fast wind and heavy rain, they can not make it last all morning or all day. A fortiori man can he survive long if he engages in violent and disorderly. The words "do not last long" are the preceding words. "Do not last all morning, not last all day."

The fast wind and heavy rain are here the symbol of force, violence, activity (blame that Lao-tzu). This commentator seems to think that this is of short duration would have heaven and earth, should they lose their base. In this case, Lao Tzu would imply that they are in absolute repose, and that rest is the guarantee on their duration. We read in Chapter II, Book II: "If the earth was at rest, it would break. "

they can correct their bad qualities and achieve virtue. This is where the virtuous man is the master (tutor) of those who are not virtuous.

that man is not virtuous becomes the rescue of the virtuous man.

their nature and if we act, we give a lot of pain and torment, and the creatures do more than be troubled.

which meets the principle in inert and is the symbol of death)? Here's why. The use of weapons is a cause for mourning. If he wins and he killed many men, it complies with funeral rites and placed on the right. General second occupies the left, because he has no right to chair the carnage, or even kill an enemy on his own authority.
plain clothes, he cried, uttering sobs.
The Tao is the origin of all beings and all beings are offshoots of the Tao.
All rivers and streams of the mountains back to the central point where the waters meet, and even all beings will go to their origin (ie, returning to the Tao of whence they came).

beings to return him "to put my translation in harmony with the best reviews. Moreover, without this implied, it would be impossible to make sense of the last sentence of this chapter.
called longevity.
if it serves exquisite food that is enough to stop the passing traveler. But when the music stopped, when the delicacies are consumed, the traveler withdrew in haste. This comparison shows that the pleasures of the century are unrealistic and have little time.
It is not the Tao itself. Although he can not celebrate our ears nor flatter our taste like music and delicacies, as we passed it and we actually use, it may spread to the world and posterity remote.

Music and food are something too puny to be put in comparison with the Tao.

The elegance of the monkey
During his wanderings among the five peaks capped with glittering mist, Chuang-tzu crossed the King of Wei and his entourage came to picnic on the shores of Lake Heavenly Tranquility. The wise man was wearing a linen dress roughly patched holes in his shoes were tied with pieces of string.

- How did you fall misery, Master! Exclaimed the monarch.
- Destitution is not distressed, "said Chuang Tzu. The only misfortune of the wise is not able to transmit his understanding of the Tao. The time is not auspicious for the philosophers, that's all! - What do you mean? asked the king.
- When the monkeys in the trees, it flies from branch to branch, as graceful as a bird. But when it moves among the bushes and tall grass, his approach is ridiculous! Thus the wise man who has no following among the princes of his time walks ragged. But who cares! If he has followers who practice his words, his heart is filled. There is true because his wealth of knowledge that you convey, it is yours forever!
